Like many in the first day cover collecting universe, I was shocked to learn recently of his death. It is also a loss for the hobby media in general. His long career and editing experience for various forms of media was something I just learned from Al;s obituary. This experience allowed Al to continue the American First Day Cover Society's tradition of providing a high caliber journal that was honored by many of the philatelic reviewing organizations and sponsors of philatelic literature contests. Al's "editorials" always provided information on what professional skills were needed to produce a journal, but they also "announced" to the society's members what new technology was available that assisted him but also might be of valuable to the readers of First Days as well. Like many, I was "rewarded" by Al's epic telephone calls. Many of these calls started out with editorials concerns but soon moved to a wide range of topics, most of which were not philatelic related. I always was fascinated by his knowledge of history, music, genealogy, railroadiana, and the media world in general. We shared a love of aviation and airmail cover collecting. As we say in in Judaism, "May his memory be a blessing."

I was grateful to Al for hiring me as a summer “stringer” for the Hartford Courant back in the early 1970’s. He was tough but taught me so much about journalism. Once in a while he even gave me a byline! He was a true “Lou Grant” and I was happy to read about his career and post-retirement accomplishments. Condolences to the family.

My most sincere condolences. Over the past 4 years I have been writing for Al and he had become a true friend to me. I cannot express how sad I was to hear of his passing. His leaving us is a big loss to me and I know it must be an even greater loss for closer friends and family. God bless Michael
